Emperor Khai Dinh (Khai Dinh), who ruled 1916-1925, has chosen slope of Chau Chu mountain, 10 km from Hue, as the location to build his tomb (Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh). The construction of the tomb was started on 1920 and lasted for 11 years. | |
Emperor Khai Dinh (1885-1925) was the 12th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam. He ruled from 1916 to 1925 and was known for his controversial policies, particularly his efforts to modernize and westernize Vietnam. Khai Dinh's reign was marked by a number of significant events, including the end of World War I, the rise of the Vietnamese nationalist movement, and the increasing influence of foreign powers in Vietnam. One of Khai Dinh's most controversial policies was his decision to impose a tax on peasants to fund the construction of his opulent tomb, which is now a popular tourist attraction. Many Vietnamese viewed this tax as an unjust burden on the poor, and it contributed to growing dissatisfaction with Khai Dinh's rule. Despite these controversies, Khai Dinh did make some efforts to improve the lives of his subjects. He implemented a number of public health initiatives, including measures to combat malaria and smallpox, and he also worked to improve infrastructure, particularly roads and bridges. Khai Dinh was succeeded by his son, Emperor Bao Dai, who would become the last emperor of Vietnam before the country was divided into North and South Vietnam. |
