The 127,135-acre Black River Wild Forest is located within the southwestern foothills of the Adirondack Forest Preserve and offers a broad spectrum of recreational opportunities, from snowmobiling near the adjacent communities of Old Forge and Otter Lake to hiking on foot trails in remote areas.
Historic Herkimer County is New York State’s tallest county, with its feet in the Mohawk Valley and its head in the Adirondack Mountains. With the Mohawk River and Erie Canal coursing through it, Herkimer County has rich history since the Revolutionary War era. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer.
